Coe, Hanafin propel Cougars to victory in Region XX Tourney

FREDERICK, Md.- Wow! What a baseball game! A nine inning battle between two of the best teams in Region XX DII baseball action hit the field on Friday afternoon as the Cougars of Frederick Community College squared off against the Cardinals from CCBC Catonsville. The contest was a pitcher's duel that lasted 121 minutes. In the end, the Cougars would push a run across in the bottom of the eighth to secure the 1-0 victory.

Tip the hat to both starting pitchers in this one as both pitchers tossed complete games. Travis Weaver suffers the loss for the Cardinals, but he was pumping gas on the mound. He struck out 13 FCC batters and gave up just three hits. FCC's Brayden Coe was lights out as well. Coe shut down the Cardinals and limited them to just five hits. Coe improves to 8-1 on the year and has an ERA of just 1.37. That is getting it done on the hill!

In the eighth inning with one out, Jacob Wetzel was drilled in the knee by a HBP (hit by pitch). With two outs on the board, Jacob Wetzel swiped second base on a delayed steal and this would turn out to be crucial. Mitch Long would earn a free pass and then the game got interesting. Connor Hanafin came through in the clutch with a huge two-out hit to push the go-ahead run as Wetzel slid across home plate on a play at the plate.

Up Next: The #1 seed FCC Cougars (33-13) will battle the #2 seed CCBC Essex Knights at 10 AM on Saturday morning.
