FREDERICK, Md.- The (RV) Frederick Community College baseball team lives to see another day as they split today in the 2019 NJCAA Division II Baseball District Championship best of three series. The two teams will return to the diamond on Saturday afternoon, with the winner crowned district champion, punching their ticket to Enid, Oklahoma for the NJCAA DII World Series. It was the Falcons taking game one by the score of 7-0 in the opener of Friday afternoon while the Cougars took game two defeating Lackawanna College, 19-5. FCC sits at 36-14 overall on the season.
Baseball is a funny game. In game one, the FCC offense is held to just three hits and commits four miscues in the field. In the nightcap, the Cougars light up the scoreboard to plate 19 runs.
In game two, FCC jumped on the scoreboard in the first frame with a solo shot off the bat of Jacob Wetzel (6 HR). It was a no-doubter once it left the barrel and this deep fly jump started the Cougar offense. In their first at-bats, the momentum shifted back to the Falcons as they scored four runs. The Cougars answered in the second inning with a clutch 2-run single off the bat of Kyle Schofield. The Cougars would tie it up at four after two innings of play.
The big blow of the game came off the bat of Jacob Berry. In the third, Berry would smack a grand slam to put the Cougars up 8-4. In the top of the eighth, Priamo Lozada (10 HR) and Jacob Berry deposited baseballs for back-to-back jacks. For Berry, it was his second long ball of the game and fifth overall on the year! The FCC backstop had one heck of a game! He knocked in eight runs in the win while Schofield would drive in four in the victory. Connor Hanafin and Hayden Kissel had three hits each. In the second game, the FCC offense pounded out 16 hits, including four baseballs that left the yard!
A huge tip of the cap to FCC relief pitcher Max Proctor (1-1). He earned the win on the hill as he pitched 8.2 innings in relief. An unbelievable performance by the right-handed hurler!
