The Frederick CC Cougars men's basketball team and second-year Head Coach Darryl Whiten snapped a 5-game losing skid by defeating Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Black Bears 89-68 to close out January on a winning note.

Before the first half concluded, Malik Witherspoon recorded his 11th double-double of the season. Jaden Arrington and Justin Morrisey also helped set the tone offensively, both scoring in double figures before the midway point.

The Cougars only trailed once to the Black Bears early in the first half at 15:28, which was quickly obliterated with a Witherspoon jumper in the lane, assisted by Morrisey, who finished with a game-high six assists. From there, the Cougars would heat up on a 20-2 run to take a 29-13 lead at the midway point of the first half. FCC's solid defense and quick offensive transitions would help give them a 20-point lead at halftime.

The Cougars would maintain their 20-point cushion throughout the second half and pull ahead by as many as 30 points at one point. Andrew Young came off the bench and gave Coach Whiten 20 minutes to record six points, nine rebounds, and one block shooting 100% from the field.

Frederick led in just about every statistical category, besting Penn Highlands in shooting percentage (51%-33%), rebounds (51-32), assists (24-9), and bench points (32-21). Arrington would record 15 points with three assists, and Morrisey finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Witherspoon would finish the game with 17 points and 18 rebounds, leading the country in rebounding, averaging 13.9 rebounds a game.

The Cougars are back in action Wednesday, February 1, hosting the Hagerstown Community College Hawks at the Athletics Center at 7:00 PM.
