Frederick Community College Athletics is proud to announce a new partnership with Dr. David Higgins, MD, who will join the department's sports medicine staff as Team Physician. With over 40 years of experience in sports medicine and orthopedic surgery, Dr. Higgins brings a wealth of expertise and leadership to FCC student-athletes.
A graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine, Dr. Higgins completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and his sports medicine fellowship at the Hughston Orthopedic Clinic in Columbus, Georgia. He is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and has been practicing in Maryland since 1991.
Dr. Higgins' extensive background spans the Olympic, collegiate, and high school levels. He has served as Assistant Medical Director at the Atlanta Olympic Games, Team Physician for USA Basketball Championships, and medical staff member for the U.S. Olympic Committee at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, 2012 London Olympics, and 2016 Rio Olympics. His work has supported Team USA athletes in softball, basketball, and field hockey, including serving as Team USA's Head Physician at the 2001 World University Games in Poland. In addition, Dr. Higgins has served as a team physician for American University, Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, and local all-star games.
A native of the Washington, D.C. area, Dr. Higgins is deeply involved in his community, serving on the Board of Directors at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, MD, the Board of Trustees for USA Field Hockey, and the Board of Trustees for the Catholic Youth Organization. He retired as a Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve and a former Chief of Sports Medicine for the Navy.
"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Higgins to our athletics department," said Sean Dash, Head Athletic Trainer. "His unmatched experience and commitment to student-athlete health and safety will enhance the care and support we provide at FCC."
"I'm excited by the chance to collaborate closely with coaches, Sean Dash, ATC, Head Athletic Trainer, the athletic training staff, and administrators to create a strong culture of athlete care. By providing evidence-based, accessible, and compassionate medical guidance, I can help student-athletes feel confident that their well-being is the top priority." Dr. Higgins said about joining the Frederick Athletic Department Staff and working with student athletes. He went on to say, "Ultimately, what excites me most is being part of their journey-helping them succeed on the field, in the classroom, and in the lives they are building beyond college athletics."
Dr. Higgins resides in the area with his wife and dogs. He and his wife are the proud parents of three children: a son who served overseas with the Army in Afghanistan, his daughter, who runs his office, and his youngest son, who is in medical school.
This partnership underscores FCC Athletics' ongoing commitment to providing comprehensive health, safety, and performance support for its student-athletes.
