Cougars Win Double-Overtime Thriller; Advance to Region XX D2 Championship Game
Hagerstown, Md. – The No. 6 seed Frederick Community College men's basketball team took on the No. 3 seed Northern Virginia Community College in Region XX D2 men's basketball Tourney action on Saturday night. FCC would defeat the Nighthawks 73-69 in double overtime.
The contest went back and forth in the first twenty minutes of the game and the Cougars took a slim advantage into the locker room by the score of 26-23. FCC would come out of the intermission taking a 37-28 lead on a Dashon Bell lay-up at the 16:27 mark in the second half. However, some sharp shooting by the Nighthawks would get them right back in the game.
With just three second left in the contest and NOVA clinging to a 54-52 lead, FCC point guard Morris Robinson would penetrate the lane and was fouled on his shot attempt. Robinson stepped to the free throw line and was cool as the other side of the pillow knocking down two free throws to send the game into overtime.
In the second overtime, O'Nel David and D. Bell stepped up to the plate for the Cougars. Bell would net six points and David would connect on two crucial buckets in the second overtime.
The Cougars earned the victory and received production from a number of players. Point guard Morris Robinson and shooting guard Dashon Bell (6-of-9 FG) came up big for Head Coach Emonte Hill. Robinson and Bell each poured in 15 points. Sharp shooter Josiah Jones chipped in with 11 points and Eric Blankson cleaned up on the boards hauling down eight rebounds in 20 minutes of action.
With the victory the Cougars improve to 12-16 on the year and NOVA concludes their season at 19-6.
FCC will play No. 2 seed Garrett College on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 3:00 PM at Hagerstown Community College. The winner of tomorrow's contest will punch their ticket to the National Tournament.
