Men's Hoops Sees Historic Season Come to End

Danville, IL – Game 12 featured an elimination game between South Mountain College and Frederick Community College.

 

Both teams came out flat, committing two fouls and missing a handful of shots until South Mountain's Jackson Price opened up the scorebook with a three. That would be the only points for South Mountain in the first four minutes.

 

Frederick turned in an 8-0 to take an 8-3 lead. Fredrick extended their lead to seven until Price connected again from deep, 12-8. Frederick's last seven points had come off of free throws to lead 13-8. At this point, the teams' had combined for five field goals and 11 fouls.

 

Dashon Bell went coast-to-coast for Frederick, giving them a 10-point lead 22-12, the largest of the game. Price put in a lay up and a pair of free throws to cut Frederick's lead to six and giving him his tenth point of the game.

 

After a drive to the lane and a no-call, Price was issued a technical foul for his displeasure. After a three by Frederick's Josiah Jones, the lead went to 11.

 

After a small run by South Mountain, Price and Jackson traded threes and Frederick led, 31-24. South Mountain was issued their second technical foul at the 1:40 mark in the first half.

 

At the half Frederick led South Mountain, 39-33.

Price opened up the second half hitting his fourth three-pointer of the game. A quick 5-0 run had the game within one point. But Frederick rallied and bumped the lead back to six, 44-38.

 

Five points in a row by Johnson had South Mountain within one, 46-45. Another basket by South Mountain and they had their first lead since the first field goal of the game when they lead 3-0. Frederick called timeout and executed to regain the lead 49-47 as Rashard Lewis hit a three from the left wing.

 

Connor MacDougall drove baseline and slammed home two points to give South Mountain their largest lead of the game, 52-49. The pace of the game picked up and the both teams began trading points.

 

A three pointer by Jones and a three-point play by Eric Blankson gave Frederick a slight advantage at the 10:05 mark, 59-54, capping a 10-2 run.

 

Price drilled his fifth three from the left corner and South Mountain was within four, 63-59 with 8:06 to go. He connected again out of a timeout to put the game back within a point. Their run continued as MacDougall knocked down a pair of free throws giving South Mountain back the lead, 64-63.

 

MacDougall converted a three-point play to extend South Mountain's lead to four, 67-63. By 3:00, Frederick had failed to score a point for over five minutes. A jump hook by MacDougall and the lead was six with two minutes to go in the game. Again, a minute later, Frederick still having not scored, MacDougall executed the same move and scored his ninth straight point for South Suburban to give them a 71-63 lead with under a minute left.

 

Finally, after seven minutes and 40 seconds, Frederick made a three pointer to cut their deficit to five, 71-66 with 44 seconds to go in the game.

 

Free throws sealed the game and South Mountain held on to defeat Frederick, 75-69.

 

South Mountain College will advance to face Columbus State on Friday at 11:00am in the consolation bracket. Frederick Community College is eliminated from the 2016 NJCAA DII Men's Basketball Tournament.
