Cougars Fend Off Riverhawk Comeback to Remain Undefeated at Home 62-59
Frederick Community College Cougars men's basketball team spoiled, what would have been, a comeback for Anne Arundel CC Riverhawks 62-59 on Saturday, December 3, to remain undefeated at home.
The Cougars got out to an early lead, with Malik Witherspoon scoring the game's first basket. Frederick never let the Riverhawks grab the lead in the first half and went into halftime with their largest lead of the game, 37-29. AACC came back from an eight-point deficit at halftime and led by as many as six points with 13 minutes to play in the second half. The Cougars would continue to fight back for the next ten minutes until Witherspoon tied the game up at 57 with a midrange jumper from the corner with three minutes to play. Anne Arundel would level the score one more time before Treshawn Warren would make a free throw to give his team the lead with three seconds left in the game, and Witherspoon would seal it with two more free throws with one second left on the clock.
Witherspoon (18 points and ten rebounds) and Warren (12 points and ten rebounds) would both finish with double-doubles. Justin Morrisey was vital for the Cougars, especially on defense, finishing with 13 points, five rebounds, four blocks, four assists, and three steals.
Jaden Arrington and Andrew Young each corralled five rebounds, while Arrington added nine points. Although Frederick outrebounded Anne Arundel 46-40, FCC pulled down twice as many offensive rebounds for the game with a 20-10 margin.
Frederick is on the road for the next two contests, beginning Sunday with a 2 pm game at Navy JV and again at Christendom College on Wednesday, December 7, at 7 pm. The Cougars return home next Saturday, December 10, against CCBC Catonsville at 4 pm to defend their undefeated streak at home.
