Cougars Surpass Catamounts in Second-Half Comeback 95-79
The Frederick CC Cougars men's basketball team had a huge second-half comeback on the road against the WVU Potomac State College Catamounts to win their seventh game of the season, 95-79.
The Cougars got off to a slow start and fell behind early in the first four minutes of the game, 17-4. A made layup from Justin Morrisey at the 14:11 mark paused the Catamounts 8-0 run, but Frederick would continue to trail for the entire first half. Potomac State would take their largest lead by as many as 16 points at 11:03. The Cougars would continue to fight to get back in this game, led by Morrisey, who scored 11 points in the first half, followed up by Malik Witherspoon, who added eight first-half points. Nate Owusu would come off the bench to get two steals and chip in 7 first-half points.
Frederick managed to pull within three points at halftime trailing 40-37. However, Coach Whiten's halftime speech was what the team needed to keep pushing as they came out to score the first four points of the half to take their first lead.
The Catamounts weren't going to go down easy as the Cougars found new life in the second half as both teams exchanged baskets. After Brayden Jones got fouled and converted the first of his two free throws at the 16:00 minute mark, the Cougars would hit a turning point and start pulling away. Frederick would go on a 14-4 run for the next three and a half minutes to take a double-digit lead. Frederick would outscore Potomac State 58-39 in the second half.
Jaden Arrington finished with 18 points, all coming in the second half, as Malik Witherspoon would drop 24 second-half points to finish with 32 points and 21 boards. Cole McKeever would find his teammates for an assist eight times in the second half and finished with ten assists with zero turnovers on the day to go with four points. Morrisey finished with 16 points and eight rebounds.
The Cougars are back in action Wednesday, February 8, hosting the Chesapeake College Skipjacks at the Athletics Center at 7:00 PM.
