A Tale of Two Games as Cougars and Riverhawks Split Doubleheader

ARNOLD, Md.  – The FCC Cougars and Anne Arundel CC Riverhawks each picked up a win on Saturday afternoon in two very different ways. The Cougars dominated game one in six innings by the score of 13-1, but were defeated in game two 19-11 in five innings by the Riverhawks. With the loss, FCC falls to 7-18 (3-11 MD JUCO) on the season and AACC sits at 6-19 (4-14 MD JUCO).

GAME ONE

A solid start for the FCC offense. FCC leadoff hitter Kayla Green reached base as she was hit by a pitch. Morgan Alder drew a free pass. Next up Katie Shugars (.412 BA) and she did not disappoint and she deposited her fifth homer of the season to make it 3-0 in the first frame. FCC would score in five out of six innings, defeating the Riverhawks 13-1 in six innings.

Ashley Bentley (.354 BA) and Katlyn Davis' bats were as hot as the temperature on Saturday afternoon. Both Bentley and Davis pounded out three hits and knocked in a pair of runs. Blair Willis (2B) chipped in with a pair of hits and had two RBIs.

Bentley (3.30 ERA) got it done on the mound as well for FCC. She tossed a complete game and improves to 5-7 on the year. The hard-throwing righty struck out eight in six innings of work. She gave up just six hits and only one earned run.

The Cougars slugged 13 hits in the victory and committed just one miscue in the field.

GAME TWO

The start of game two resembled that of a football score. FCC put up a touchdown in their first at-bats and AACC followed up with two field goals in their first frame. From there, the Riverhawks bats stayed hot and led to a 19-11 victory over FCC. AACC registered 17 hits in the win and scored 12 runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach.

FCC's Rachel Jarvis, Katie Shugars, and Blair Willis each had two hits in the game. Ashley Garcia went 1-for-3 and knocked in a pair of runs for the Cougars. Katlyn Davis and Hannah Laney had two RBIs for FCC.

FCC starting pitcher McKenzie Haynes suffered the loss on the mound. She falls to 1-7 on the year. She gave up 11 hits, resulting in 10 earned runs.

UP NEXT

After playing eight games in four days, FCC will enjoy a well-deserved day off on Sunday and return to the diamond on Monday (4/16) when they travel to Montgomery College in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3:00 P.M.
