Strong Second Half Propels Women’s Basketball Victory

Four Cougars hit the double-digit scoring mark in victory over NOVA

ANNADALE, Va. – The Frederick Community College women's basketball team hit the road for a key Region XX D2 matchup on Tuesday night at Northern Virginia Community College. The Cougars would register four players in double figures and run away with a 78-64 victory over the Nighthawks. With the victory, FCC improves to 15-11 on the season. More importantly, the Cougars sit at 7-2 in Region XX D2 standings. The Cougars will return to the hardwood on March 3rd when they travel to Potomac State College of WVU for their final regular season contest as they gear up for postseason action. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 P.M.

FCC would jump out to a 34-20 lead at 6:39 mark in the second quarter with a 3-pointer by Morgan Cobb. The Nighthawks would not go away quietly as they cut the deficit to just seven points (37-30) after two quarters. FCC's Morgan Mitchell was perfect from the field in the first 20 minutes of action, hitting on 5-of-5 field goals and ending the half with 12 points.

FCC second year Head Coach Sheldon Henry drew up a perfect game plan out of the locker room as the Cougars hit on all cylinders maintaining a double-digit lead in the final 20 minutes of action. Credit FCC point guard Morgan Mitchell. She continues to have a stellar freshman campaing serving as the leader of the FCC offense.

Mitchell led the scoring attack for FCC with a team-high 20 points (7-of-9 FGs, 6-of-6 FTs). She got plenty of help from her teammates. Morgan Cobb chipped in with 16 points and Dajah Gee pumped in 15 points. Jone Ayers filled up the stat sheet in the victory. She scored 12 points, pulled down seven rebounds, and registered seven swipes in the victory. Gee did work on the glass by hauling down eight rebounds and was in the giving mood by handing out eight assists.

FCC was solid at the charity stripe connecting on 17-of-23 (73.9%) attempts. The Cougars turned up the heat on the defense, forcing the Nighthawks into 21 miscues.
