Cougars Edge Delaware Tech in Nail-Biter at MC Tipoff Tournament
After falling to Monroe University on day one of the MC Tipoff Tournament, the FCC Cougars women's basketball team bounced back to defeat Delaware Technical Community College 47-44 on the second day of the tournament, led by Laysia Jemmott, who posted a double-double with 17 points and 18 rebounds.
The Cougars overcame a slow start, trailing 13-10 at the end of the first quarter and 23-19 at halftime. Offensively, FCC struggled to find their rhythm, shooting just 26% from the field and 8% from beyond the arc. Despite the shooting woes, their tenacious defense and dominance on the boards (33 rebounds) kept them in the game.
The turning point came in the third quarter when FCC outscored Delaware Tech 15-6, fueled by key defensive stops and Jemmott's relentless work in the paint. Guard Bre Lawyer added 12 points, including crucial free throws in the final moments, while Heaven Murray dished out five assists and contributed six points.
In the fourth quarter, Delaware Tech fought back but couldn't pull ahead because of the Cougars' persistent defense. FCC's defense forced 29 turnovers, and clutch free throws secured the win.
The Cougars start the season 1-1 overall; the Cougars look ahead as they prepare to travel to Hagerstown Community College as the game is scheduled for Wednesday, November 20, at 7 p.m.
