Tony Checchia

B.A., Mt. St. Mary’s College, 1990

F.C.C., 1986-87

Tony C, as he is known in the community, played soccer at Frederick Community College for one year while earning thirty six credit hours.  He subsequently transferred to Mount St. Mary’s, from which he graduated with a double major in Economics and Spanish, with a minor in Spanish.  Tony played in the Mason Dixon Soccer League 1987-2007.  He was the founder of the Frederick Town United Soccer Club.   He privately funded and developed the River’s Edge Soccer Park, and funded and redeveloped the Sportsplex into the Frederick Indoor Sports Center.

“After graduating from Frederick High School in 1986, I was conditionally accepted to Mt. Saint Mary’s based upon completing two semesters of studies at FCC.  I ended up taking three semesters there and gained a high level of clarity and maturity as a student.  My experience at FCC was invaluable and enabled me to play soccer and act in the school play as the lead in “A Street Car Named Desire.”  The experience challenged my resolve to want to pursue a four-year degree.  By the time I left, I was certain that I was ready to further my academic career/studies and my focus shifted from sports to academics.  Ultimately, I graduated with a double major and minor form Mt. Saint Mary’s.”
