Hagerstown, Md.- While most of you were tuned in to March Madness today, the nationally ranked NJCAA DII #9 Frederick Community College baseball team hit the road for a rare away contest battling the Hawks from Hagerstown Community College in MD JUCO action. The Cougars would explode late and defeat HCC 15-1 to run their win streak to 13 games with an overall record of 14-2 including 1-0 in conference play.
GAME RECAP
FCC starting pitcher Timothy Milligan was lights out on the hill today for the Cougars. The righty submariner remains perfect on the season at 3-0. Milligan would go six strong innings and struck out eight batters for his efforts. Dylan Gutierrez came out of the bullpen and was pumping gas to earn his first save of the season to close it out for FCC.
Clinging on to a 2-1 lead through six innings, the Cougar offense would go to work in the top of the seventh. Leadoff hitter Michael Castillo singled and Billy Lennox would lay down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Castillo into scoring position. The next at bat for the Cougars would be that "game-changing" moment. With one swing of the bat, Devin Bell crushed a screaming line drive over the left field fence to put the Cougars up 4-1. The long ball was Bell's sixth of the season and once it left the bat it was a no-doubter. FCC was not done. Back to back singles by Chris Mattison and Ron Healy set the table for Brett Strahin who delivered a one out 2-run single plating Mattison and Healy. With his single in the seventh inning, Mattison extends his hitting streak to thirteen games. Dalton Haymaker would add a two-run single in the ninth to join the hit parade.
FCC catcher Ron Healy was "in the zone" and flat out had himself a day. The power-hitting lefty had four hits and reached base five times in the victory. Also, Healy showed off his cannon of an arm. In the first inning he threw out a runner attempting to swipe second base and in the fifth inning he picked off a runner at first quieting the Hawks. Leadoff hitter Michael Castillo smacked three hits and reached base five times as well. Each starter for FCC registered a hit for the potent offensive attack.
