Pitching Dominates in Doubleheader Sweep of Skipjacks

Pitching Dominates in Doubleheader Sweep of Skipjacks

FREDERICK, Md. – Although the calendar reads early April, today's matchup featuring FCC vs. Chesapeake College had more of a postseason tournament feel. The Cougars had four pitchers dominate on the hill posting zeros on Chesapeake College. FCC won by the scores of 2-0 and 4-0 in two very well played baseball games. FCC improves to 19-10 (11-4) on the season, including 11-1 in Region XX DII action. The Skipjacks fall to 17-10 overall on the year. The Cougars also extend their win streak to four games. The Cougars will return to the diamond on 4/9 for a single game vs. Hagerstown Community College. First pitch is set for 3:00 P.M.

Game One

FCC starting pitcher Brayden Coe was dealing from the first pitch when he took the mound. The first seven outs of the game for the Chesapeake offense were via the strikeout. Coe gave up just four hits and remains perfect on the year at 6-0. He would record eight punchouts in the win. In the sixth inning, FCC's skipper, Rodney Bennett, turned the ball over to Max Proctor. He would record the final six outs of the game to earn the save. Proctor gave up just one hit and struck out five batters.

A big momentum swing in the game came in the top of the third. The Skipjacks were threatening but Jacob Wetzel put an end to that. A baserunner attempted to take third base on an overthrow by Jacob Berry. Wetzel backed up the play and unloaded the bazooka to throw out the runner, ending the inning.

In the bottom of the third, Brett Stallings would keep the inning alive with a two out single. With two runners on base, Mitch Long crushed a double in the gap, scoring Kyle Schofield and Stallings. That is all the FCC pitching staff would need to secure the victory.

Game Two

A strange start to the second game. In the top of the first, Dayan Reinoso for Chesapeake hit a homer for what appeared to be the first run of the game. However, he missed touching second base and was called out. Good catch, Coach Bennett.

The Cougars would jump on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. Brandon Austin hit a solid single through the left side of the infield. Austin would advance to second on a Connor Hanafin fielder's choice. He stole third with two outs in the inning. On the next pitch, Hanafin got caught in a rundown, allowing Austin to score. In the bottom of the fifth, FCC would tack on one more run with an RBI-single from Jacob Wetzel. The Cougars would add two more insurance runs as Hayden Kissel drove in Jacob Berry and Kyle Schofield would come up with a clutch single to score Austin, putting FCC up 4-0.

Nick Karlinchak (3-1) turned in a dynamite performance on the mound for FCC. He went five innings and gave up just two hits, striking out five. He would turn it over to Max Cannon for the final six outs of the game. Cannon gave up just one hit, fanning two batters.

A tip of the hat to the FCC coaching staff comprised of Head Coach Rodney Bennett, and assistant coaches Steve Insley, and Dan Gerjets. The staff made all the right moves today in the crucial sweep over the Skipjacks.

Congrats Jacob Wetzel

We have a new single-season leader in triples for the FCC baseball program! Congrats Jacob! Nine is fine. He is hitting .419 on the season with 43 RBIs.
