BALTIMORE, MD. – The #7 FCC baseball team traveled to CCBC Essex for a Region 20 D2 matchup. Mother Nature cooperated as the Cougars took game one by the score of 5-2. In the nightcap, the Knights would score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to earn the split. FCC sits at 22-3 overall on the season. The Cougars return to the diamond on Wednesday as they play host to Gettysburg JV. The first pitch is slated for 4 PM. FCC Head Coach Rodney Bennett is just one win shy of career win #700.
FCC starting pitcher John Cummings (4-0) tossed himself quite a gem in the opening game. The crafty righty went 6 2/3 innings to earn his fourth win of the season. He gave up just five hits and one earned run to carry FCC to victory number 22. Jared Hurlburt recorded the final out of the game to pick up his fifth save of the season.
The Cougars came out swinging the bats as they tallied 11 hits in the win. Justin Acal went 3-for-4 at the dish including a triple. He knocked in three runs and is now hitting .450 on the year. Teammate Spencer Rhoads started behind the dish and went 2-for-3, including his first blast of the season that came in the top of the sixth frame. Nicco German and Aidan Greaney each doubled for the Cougars.
The nightcap was filled with fireworks! The Cougars trailed 7-5 heading into their last at-bats in the top of the seventh. Joshua Wilson got a hold of one and tattoed a solo shot over the left-field wall. And this is when things got interesting. FCC's Wyatt Miles singled to left field. He would advance to second on a walk by Demetri Jamison and then Miles would advance to third on an errant throw by the catcher. Aidan Masters hit a sharp grounder to first, Miles broke for the plate, hurdled the tag, and is called safe. It was a Top 10 Sportscenter highlight. That would tie it up a seven.
In the bottom of the seventh, Essex would load the bases and push across the game-winning run on a wild pitch. Aidan Baadte was tagged with the loss and drops his record to 0-1.
Justin Acal and Joshua Wilson are on fire for FCC. Acal went 2-for-4 (2B, HR) in game two, including a four-bagger. It was Acal's fifth homer of the season. Wilson left the yard for his first dinger of the season and also recorded a double. He knocked in a pair of teammates and is hitting .333 on the year.
