Late Game Heroics Earns Split For Baseball
FREDERICK, MD. – On Saturday afternoon, the #7 Frederick Community College Cougars played host to the Cardinals from CCBC Catonsville in Region 20 D2 action. CCBC Catonsville took game one by the score of 7-3. FCC would bounce back in the nightcap with a 2-1 victory over the Cardinals. #7 FCC has an overall record of 24-4 on the year.
GAME 1
CCBC Catonsville put a 3-spot on the board as Alex Elliot hit a 3-run homer to put the Cardinals up 4-2 after three innings of play. CCBC Catonsville would add three more runs in the game to take the 7-3 decision. The Cardinals outhit the Cougars by a count of 11-7. The game featured a total of seven errors as both teams battled some nasty weather in the first two innings of play.
Aidan Masters and Brodey Neveker each had a pair of hits for the Cougars.
Patrick Bauer picked up the win for the Cardinals as he improves to 3-2 on the season. FCC starting pitcher Ezekiel Gongola suffers his first setback of the season, falling to 4-1 overall.
GAME 2
Heading into the bottom of the sixth, the game was tied up 1-1. Brodey Neveker stepped to the plate and smoked his fifth homer of the season over the centerfield fence. Once it left the bat, it was a no-doubter. Biggest play of the game that didn't make the boxscore was CCBC Catonsville threatening late in the game with just one out and a runner on third. A deep fly ball was hit to centerfield and it appeared Catonsville would push across the go-ahead run. That was not the case as FCC's Joshua Wilson made the perfect catch and unloaded a missle to the plate for the bang-bang play at the plate as the runner was called out.
This game featured two of the top arms in Region 20 D2 baseball and the Daniel Leo vs. Travis Weaver matchup didn't disappoint the large crowd on Saturday afternoon. Leo went the distance and remains perfect on the year. He is sporting a record of 4-0.
ON DECK
