Cougars Split Doubleheader with Allegany
The Frederick CC Cougars baseball team welcomed the Allegany College of Maryland Trojans for a Region 20 DII doubleheader that displayed both offensive fireworks and a classic pitcher's duel.
Frederick came out strong in game one, flexing their bats in a 10-2 victory that featured a well-rounded offensive attack and a steady outing from starter Luke Pietrandrea, who allowed three hits, one earned run, and recorded three strikeouts. The Cougars jumped on the Trojans early, scoring three runs in the first inning and never looking back. Key hits came from Jacob Downey, who drove in three runs, and Casey Westerberg, whose two-run double in the fifth sealed the game. Pietrandrea improved to 4-0 on the year with five solid innings of work, while Adam Horst closed things out.
In game two, pitching was strong for both teams, but the Cougars didn't have an answer for the Trojans' lone run in the second inning, falling short 1-0. Despite quality pitching from Ethan Duff, who struck out eight and surrendered three hits and one run over five innings, and Matthew Koeneke, who came in to close out the final two innings without giving up a hit, Frederick's offense couldn't find the timely hit they needed. The Cougars' leadoff hitter Cole Swinimer had two hits in three at-bats.
With the split, the Cougars sit at 19-3 overall and 9-1 in Region 20 DII play. They'll look to bounce back on the road this Saturday, March 22, with a doubleheader at CCBC Dundalk starting at 1 PM.
