Cougars Split Against Dragons in High-Scoring Battle
The Frederick Community College Cougars softball team split their doubleheader against Howard Community College on Tuesday with a tough loss in Game 1 before bouncing back for a thrilling walk-off victory in Game 2.
In the opener, the Cougars found themselves in an early hole as Howard jumped out to a commanding 10-0 lead in the first inning. Despite a 10-run third inning that brought them back into contention, Frederick was unable to slow down the Dragons' relentless offense, falling 25-14 in five innings. The Cougars collected 15 hits, including a two-run homer from Kaitlin Murphy, while Raegan Miller added a triple and two RBIs. Pitching struggles and defensive miscues allowed Howard to pull away late, sealing the Game 1 defeat.
Frederick came out strong in Game 2, grabbing an early 2-0 lead in the first two innings. The back-and-forth contest saw the Dragons rally late, plating five runs in the top of the seventh to take a 10-9 lead. Refusing to go down quietly, the Cougars delivered in the clutch, with Kyleigh Hull tying the game and Raegan Miller knocking in the game-winning run for an 11-10 walk-off victory. Frederick racked up 20 hits, led by Brianna Dehoff's four-hit performance, while Hailey Justice went the distance in the circle to earn the win.
With the split, Frederick moves to 5-16 overall and 4-6 in Region 20 DII play. The Cougars will look to build on their momentum when they hit the road for a doubleheader against Lackawanna College on Friday, March 28, beginning at 3 PM.
