Go Cubs Go! Wetzel Inks With Cubs As Undrafted Free Agent
FREDERICK, Maryland - A big change to baseball this year was the length of the 2020 MLB Draft. The normal 40-round MLB amateur draft was condensed to just five rounds with teams permitted to sign an unlimited number of undrafted players. One local standout received the phone call of his life when the Chicago Cubs called on Sunday afternoon.
Go, Cubs, Go! Go, Cubs Go! Hey, Chicago, what do you say? The Cubs are gonna win today. Tip of the cap to FCC outfielder Jacob Wetzel (Walkersville, MD / Walkersville High School) as he signed with the Chicago Cubs as an undrafted free agent on Sunday afternoon. He will report to camp as soon as plans are ironed out due to the pandemic. He expects to report to Arizona for the instructional league sometime in late August or early September. #FlytheW
While at FCC, Wetzel turned in a stellar career. Last season, he batted .377 and broke the single-season record with 11 triples. He recorded 61 hits and deposited six baseballs over the fence. He was off to a hot start this past spring, hitting .333 before the shortened season ended.
Congratulations Jacob! We wish you nothing but the best in your next baseball chapter.
Quote from Jacob Wetzel
"It's crazy to think that this is reality. Not many people can say they play professional baseball, and I am. I've worked hard for this and I'm extremely grateful to have the opportunity to play with the Cubs."
Quote from FCC Head Baseball Coach, Rodney Bennett
"I couldn't be any prouder than I am for Jacob and his family. He was a pleasure to coach and always represented FCC Baseball with class. Once in a lifetime opportunity and we wish him nothing but success in his next chapter."
