No. 12 Baseball Splits on Opening Day

GAME 1 Recap

AUBURNDALE, FL - Both teams were strong on the pitcher's mound Saturday, but Frederick Community College Cougars defeated Wartburg JV 2-1. The FCC pitching staff allowed just three hits to Wartburg.

Ezekiel Gongola was on the hill for Cougars. He lasted four and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits, one run while striking out nine. Jared Hurlburt (1-0) came out of the bullpen to pick up his first win of the season. The hard-throwing righty recorded the final seven outs of the game, striking out four batters.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth, FCC took a 2-1 lead as Brendan Long launched a 2-run homer that skipped off the top of the scoreboard.

Long, Demetri Jamison, and Justin Acal all had one hit to lead FCC.

GAME 2 Recap

It came down to the last play of the game, but the Cougars were on the wrong end of a 7-6 defeat to Lake Michigan College on Saturday afternoon. The game was tied at six with LMC batting in the bottom of the seventh when Ryan Radek singled on a 1-1 count, scoring the go-ahead run.

FCC did collect six hits in the high-scoring affair. The Cougars fired up the offense in the first inning. FCC plated one run when Brodey Neveker singled.

FCC tallied three runs in the sixth inning. Justin Acal, Nicco German, and Wyatt Miles all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning. Brendan Long finished with one hit and three walks.

Daniel Leo took the hill for FCC and earned the no-decision. Leo surrendered five runs on four hits over four innings, striking out five. Aiden Fernandez and Bryce Greene entered the game in relief, tossing one and one-third innings and one and one-third innings respectively. Greene (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

Brendan Long, Demetri Jamison, Acal, German, Neveker, and Spencer Rhoads each collected one hit to lead the FCC offense.

FCC (1-1) will return to the diamond on Sunday when they meet up again vs. LMC for a pair. First pitch is set for 11:30 AM.
