Cougars Extend Win Streak To Nine With Sweep of Riverhawks

FREDERICK, Md. - What an amazing time of the year! March Madness. Baseball is Back. FCC is ranked #9 in NJCAA D2. What more could a sports fan ask for? On Friday afternoon, the Cougars welcomed the Riverhawks from Anne Arundel CC for a Region 20 D2 matchup. FCC would walk away with a clean sweep by the scores of 6-4 and 10-0. The Cougars came ready to play as they dominated on the mound and their offense continues to roll.

Game 1

#9 FCC took home a 6-4 victory over Anne Arundel CC Riverhawks on Friday in FCC's home opener. AACC got things moving in the second inning, when Parker Jones singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.

The Cougars pulled away for good with three runs in the third frame. In the bottom of the third, Nicco German singled on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring one run, an error by the Riverhawks plated the second run, and then a Klay Cottis RBI ground out, scored the third run of the inning.

FCC Skipper Rodney Bennett handed the ball to ace Ezekiel Gongola (2-0) in game one. Gongola went six innings strong, allowing just two runs on three hits, striking out eight, and yielding just one free pass. The big guy was pumping some gas in his home debut.

David Antone went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the FCC offense. Antone continues to swing a hot bat for the Cougars as he is hitting .333 early in the season.  Demetri Jamison and Brendan Long chipped in with a double apiece.  Long is currently leading the FCC offense with a .526 batting average.

Game 2

Tip of the cap to FCC starting pitcher John Cummings (2-0) as he tossed a shutout in game two for the Cougars. Cummings allowed just one hit in the win and recorded seven punchouts giving up just one walk. It is the third shutout of the season for the Cougars pitching staff which ranks third in all of NJCAA D2.

The Cougars exploded in the fourth inning putting up five runs. Wyatt Miles, David Antone, Nicco German, and Justin Acal (.455 BA) each drove in runs during the inning.

The Cougars tallied ten hits in the win and top to bottom of this lineup is seeing the baseball very well. Antone, Aidan Masters, and Miles all managed multiple hits for FCC. Acal, Miles, and Brendan Kleiman each tripled for FCC.

STATS OF THE SWEEP: FCC pitchers record 15 strikeouts and gave up just four walks in the sweep. In addition, the Cougars were perfect in the field both games throwin' the leather around!
